In 1496, a law appeared forcing Jews to leave Portugal or convert to Christianity.
Not many left the country.
Some changed their name – new Christian.
Others changed their place of residence.
These people don’t eat certain types of meat (treifá) such as pork, rabbit, and also fish without scales. kosher is food that may be consumed according to Jewish law.
Today, the Jews are a well preserved community in the country.
By car or van, you can visit places where, today we have ancient synagogues and Jewish culture .
